February Sea & Sky--Thougts on Color and Design from Photo Art Director Andrea Austin

Enjoy by Day– Awe and Wonder at Night. There is something magical that happens when we are near the sea and open sky, and that magic is carried and recreated in our everyday lives. We collect shells to preserve memories of the sea's infinite design, ethereal charm, and breathtaking horizons; we sprinkle salt in our baths for relaxation that reminds us of the sea's healing properties; we light fragrant candles to recreate the tranquility of the ocean shore and the eternal sky.

It’s easy to recreate an atmosphere that embodies the sea and sky by designing open spaces that are filled with fresh air and natural light. Utilizing a range of blues, grays, whites, and golden light one can create a timeless restful palette. Colors from the sea and sky have inspired many designers across a braod range of mediums, from textiles, to pottery, to interiors. No one knows this better than the residents of Sidi Bou Said, a lovely blue and white village, perched on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Tunis . The entire town is designed as a reflection of the sea, with strong threads of blue and white woven through the design and architechture of the village.

Recreating the state of mind and freedom one experiences when near the sea is easy to do. Candles, fabric, paint and some of natures keepsakes from summer trips to a sandy beach all help to create a "sea" sanctuary in your own home. And with the hectic times in our economy and our enviornment, it has never been a better time to surround yourself with the timeless gift of sea and sky.
