Lands' End Hires Adair Rutledge to Document 48 Hours in NorCal with the Couple Behind #Vanlife

This past July, Seattle-based commercial lifestyle photographer Adair Rutledge was hired by clothing brand Lands' End to document the nomadic couple behind the wildly popular “Always the Road” blog and Instagram feed @alwaystheroad – Pete Thuli and Taylor Butcher.
Adair and her photo assistant set out to capture the duo, their photogenic pit bull, Snoop and their “road less traveled” lifestyle as they journeyed from Point Reyes to Ukiah over the course of two days. Because life on the road isn’t always as idyllic as it sounds, Adair hustled to scout locations day one and chase the light (while avoiding the crowds) the next.Ever resourceful, Adair expertly delivers the free spirit of the adventuresome couple and the serenity of this magical time and place. “It was a great adventure,” says Rutledge. “I love it when a commercial opportunity arises where I can photograph people in their own unique environments. We were able to really capture their lifestyle and their nomadic sensibility.”

The social media superstars have been living small out of a converted 2004 Sprinter van since pulling out of Dodgeville, Wisconsin (the birthplace of Lands’ End) last year. Since then, they’ve recorded their journey for 30,000-plus loyal Insta-followers.
