Crispin Porter + Bogusky Says "No Thanks," I say "You Guys Rock the Casbah!"

I read in Adweek yesterday that Crispin Porter + Bogusky is declining to participate in the "review" for a new VW agency. Right on! You see CP is VW's current ageny and has created and produced amazing work for their client. And now, for kicks VW wants to put the business up for review.

That's like saying, "Honey I know we've had a great marriage, great sex and some beautiful kids, but I think I want to date around just in case there is something better."

Well, CP isn't going to have it. They simply said, "have at it but if that's the way you're going to be, then we're out." VW may have just given up the best agency relationship they will ever have. And on top of it, do you know how much work it is going to be for VW to get a new agency up to speed on the business?

I wonder how VW would feel if I just decided on a whim to give up my swank Passat for a BMW rental car?

Where has the value of "solid relationships" gone. I want to commed CP for standing up on principle, it's an expensive one as traditional media alone for VW is close to a quarter of a million dollars. That does not include online or direct business. It also does not include creative fee. I have to think the agency will be impacted financially for a while. But my guess, another car client will be chomping at the bit to get into bed with CP.
